Completing this interview assignment was a much more meaningful experience that I thought it was going to be because it allowed me to connect with the first Mexican-American professor I have ever had. When choosing who to interview, I wasn’t sure who I was going to interview because I felt like I hadn’t created any relationship with any of my professors. Then I realized that one of my current professors, Dr. Damarys Espinoza, has had a powerful impact with her presence alone. Seeing a woman of color, who shares my background, being in that position at a university was a type of representation I didn’t realize I was missing. In a space where it can often feel difficult to find a sense of belonging, her position was a reminder that people like us belong in higher education. Interviewing her was an incredibly empowering experience that showed me that our cultural backgrounds are not barriers to overcome, but valuable assets we bring to the table. This assignment helped solidify my own aspirations and taught me how important it is to have mentors who reflect our lived experiences, which has inspired me to carry that same representation and visibility into my future career.
